Mathsmania
Maths Mania is a mathematics based education program that comes to schools with the aim of 'MAKING MATHS FUN'. Through unique 'hands on' activities, students explore mathematical concepts that are challenging, stimulating, and enjoyable. Problem solving activities encourage student interaction whilst learning and exploring at their own level of ability. Mathematics pervades all aspects of our lives - in our homes and at school. It has applications in all human activities. Students often think that mathematics is something you only do at school and its relevance to everyday life is inconsequential. MATHS MANIA has designed its activities so that students see the connection between the work they learn in the classroom and situations they encounter everyday.
What Teachers say about Maths Mania: "Have heard so much about Maths Mania. It is interactive and children love it. This is the way maths should be. I never really liked maths at school but sessions like this are non-threatening and give children an opportunity to spend quality time together learning about maths-patterns and problem solving." "My year 1 and 2 students are enthusiastic maths learners anyway but this made them even more excited. We made our own games as a follow up task and the children are still talking about it!!! I know it also has helped those teachers who don't always do hands on learning in their maths program to see how 'easy' it can be."

Session Details
Maths Mania Activities are Easy to Use and Easy to Display. A hall, multipurpose room, or a double classroom is sufficient area to set up the work-stations. 18 colourful, exciting displays stimulate students to touch and interact with the activity and experience maths in a way that is difficult to simulate in the classroom. Maths Mania caters for 45 to 60 students a session for approximately 70 minutes.
Following an introductory talk, the activities are set up around the room and the excitement begins to build. The students are split into groups of 3 or 4 and move freely around the displays. Each student has a worksheet which is used to record their answers. Both the activities and worksheets are named and numbered.
During the session the presenter and teacher move around the room helping and guiding the students when needed. Teachers are given an answer sheet and follow up material that can be undertaken back in the classroom. Students are encouraged to solve a variety of problems - discover patterns, think logically and apply maths to the physical world. The nature of this program motivates the students so that with very little encouragement they engage themselves in the activities and relish the successes this interactive opportunity offers. Often their perception of maths starts to change as students realise that maths can be interesting, challenging and fun - all at the same time. The life of an activity set is 12 months and as they are changed each year, schools can use Maths Mania as part of their curriculum knowing that their students will be exposed to new challenges each and every year!

The Book
Maths Mania has Just Released the MATHS MANIA HANDS ON MATHS LESSONS and ACTIVITY BOOK FOR THE CLASSROOM (Volume 1)
Maths Mania wants the hands on activities in this book to bring the fun of mathematics to primary aged children. Finally, in one book, a collation of over 130 activities, some familiar and others totally new, that are designed to provide the teacher easy access to exciting hands on maths. Designed by teachers for teachers, with the aim of facilitating fun activities that assist in the teaching of maths in the primary school classroom. The activities are diverse, easy to understand, simple to duplicate and applicable to all year levels. Focusing on the strands of Number, Measurement, Space, Chance & Data, and Reasoning & Strategy, theactivities place material learnt in the classroom into real life situations. Used as separate maths sessions or as reinforcement for existing content, these activities can be adapted to all year levels and provide the teacher with an alternative method of MAKING MATHS FUN.
The book is divided into sections relating to the strands covered in the KLA of Maths. Each section contains at least 25 activities specific to these strands and are suited to lower, middle or upper primary level. Most activities can be adapted to suit the grade level and are designed to use materials readily available in the classroom or playground. All sheets required for the activities are included and can be
adapted as needed. The activities should take at minimum half an hour to complete, however there are quite a number that are more involved and with discussion could take more than a session. Activities can also be changed to suit the classroom level, understanding and resources, and the teacher will find that they will be able to return to many activities a number of times in different ways and through different methods but hopefully with the same enthusiasm with which they were created.

Making mathematics fun is a challenge to all teachers. And, as they would attest, any maths program that can engage up to 500 students in mathematics in an entire day, is definitely worth a try. That's what Numeracy Australia's Maths Mania program achieved at a recent event at Essendon North primary school. Teacher Sue Elsbury said the program was beneficial for both students and teachers. "The kids really enjoyed the day and were very enthusiastic about the hands on approach used" she said. "It also provided me with a broad range of ideas and activities that I will be using with my class in the future."
The program has been visiting schools in Victoria for the past three years, with more than 1000 students participating in it last month. Numeracy Australia's Peter Corboy said the philosophy underpinning Maths Mania was to provide students at every level the opportunity to achieve and, in the process, have a great time. "We bring to your school hands on, fully interactive activities that allow students to learn and explore at their own pace and level", he said. Maths Mania offers two separate sets of activities catering for years 2 to 4 and years 5 to 7 students. Students work in groups and help each other solve mathematical problems of varying difficulty levels and covering a range of concepts. Students rotate through a series of colourful activity stations that are designed to stimulate them to explore mathematical concepts in line with both state and national guidelines. Mirror Image - Pupils from Our Lady Help of Christians primary school yesterday played with wooden kangaroos, magnets, puzzles and mirrors all in the name of maths. Children from prep and grade one looked more like they were enjoying a birthday party than a maths class as they learnt about space, numbers, chance, reasoning and measurement. Maths Mania a mathematics based education program that aims to make maths fun, was visiting the school as part of the lead up to literacy and numeracy week. Our Lady help Of Christians numeracy coordinator Adele Webster said it was a great hands on program "What we want is for kids to think that maths is fun" she said. "The way we've been running our maths program at the school, we've has a lot more kids saying 'I love maths" she said. Math Mania's Peter Corboy said "The program catered for prep to grade six pupils and was useful for developing the pupil's confidence in the subject".
