Making mathematics fun is a challenge to all teachers. And, as they would attest, any maths program that can engage up to 500 students in mathematics in an entire day, is definitely worth a try. That's what Numeracy Australia's Maths Mania program achieved at a recent event at Essendon North primary school. Teacher Sue Elsbury said the program was beneficial for both students and teachers. "The kids really enjoyed the day and were
very enthusiastic about the hands on approach used" she said. "It also provided me with a broad range of ideas and activities that I will be using with my class in the future."
The program has been visiting schools in Victoria for the past three years, with more than 1000 students participating in it last month. Numeracy Australia's Peter Corboy said the philosophy underpinning Maths Mania was to provide students at every level the opportunity to achieve and, in the process, have a great time. "We bring to your school hands on, fully interactive activities that allow students to learn and explore at their own pace and level", he said. Maths Mania offers two separate sets of activities catering for years 2 to 4 and years 5 to 7 students. Students work in groups and help each other solve mathematical problems of varying difficulty levels and covering a range of concepts. Students rotate through a series of colourful activity stations that are designed to stimulate them to explore mathematical concepts in line with both state and national guidelines.

Children from prep and grade one looked more like they were enjoying a birthday party than a maths class as they learnt about space, numbers, chance, reasoning and measurement. Maths Mania a mathematics based education program that aims to make maths fun, was visiting the school as part of the lead up to literacy and numeracy week. Our Lady help Of Christians numeracy coordinator Adele Webster said it was a great hands on program "What we want is for kids to think that maths is fun" she said. "The way we've been running our maths program at the school, we've has a lot more kids saying 'I love maths" she said. Math Mania's Peter Corboy said "The program catered for prep to grade six pupils and was useful for developing the pupil's confidence in the subject".
